Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of West African drumming, dancing, and community connection on Sunday, September 7 starting at 3pm. Led by Masina Ategou, a master teacher and performer from Togo, West Africa, will lead you through movement and drumming that connects you with the community, the ancestors, and the Self. We’re teaming up with Calming Winds to bring this event to The Blue Hydrangea in Lovettsville. Masina has spent his life immersed in the rhythms and traditions of Togolese music and dance. A professional artist, choreographer, and instructor, he has performed and taught throughout West Africa and internationally, sharing the joyful energy and deep cultural roots of his heritage. Whether leading traditional dances, drumming circles, or fusion choreography, Masina’s sessions are known for their spirit, authenticity, and heart. This gathering is informal, open to all, and filled with rhythm and movement. No experience is needed—just come with curiosity, bare feet (or good dancing shoes!), and a willingness to let the beat move you. Bring your own drum or percussion instrument if you have one—or simply show up and join the fun. We’ll start with a short intro to West African rhythm and movement, then flow into a drum jam session on the lawn. This is our last chance with Masina before he heads back to Benin for several months. He has been touring in the U.S., and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the farm again for this last event of the year. He and I first met over 25 years ago during my Peace Corps service in Togo, and it's a joy to reunite and share this experience with our local community. Proceeds will support Masina’s dance collective and ongoing community programming at the farm.
